Improve Your IELTS Speaking Fluency

Improving your IELTS Speaking Fluency and Coherence score is about more than just talking fast. It is about how logically your ideas connect and how comfortably you can maintain a conversation naturally.
Firstly, we need to understand the ‘Fluency vs. Speed’ trap. Many candidates believe fluency means speaking at a high velocity. In reality, examiners look for a natural flow.
Sometimes overthinking can be negative – as we try to look for the perfect word but we end up wasting time and dropping the fluency. It is better to use a simpler word or we can paraphrase. For example,
Original: I’m feeling pretty exhausted after that long run.
Paraphrased: I’m tired after the long run.improve your ielts speaking
Self-correction is good, but constantly stopping to fix a small grammar mistake disrupts your flow more than the mistake itself.
Avoid using bad fillers like Humm, ‘slience’ and ‘uhh’ which can give a really bad impression to the examiner. Use filler expressions to avoid the bad fillers.
Instead of “uhh,” use: “That’s an interesting question,” or “Let me think about that for a second.”
Discourse Markers can help introduce a topic and gives us more flexibility to maintain coherence and fluency such as: Moreover, On the other hand, To exemplify, To conclude
Practical Practice Tips:
Record yourself speaking for 2 minutes. Write down exactly what you said, including the “ums” and “ahs.” This makes you hyper-aware of your verbal tics.
Talk about a topic for 4 minutes. Then, talk about the same topic for 3 minutes, then 2. This forces you to become more concise and fluent with the same information.
Read aloud as this trains your mouth muscles to produce English sounds more fluidly, reducing the physical effort of speaking.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid: Memorizing Scripts can be easily spotted by the examiners as “canned” answers. If your fluency suddenly jumps from a 5 to an 8 when talking about a specific topic, they will notice the inconsistency.
